Titanium Grade 2 vs Grade 5: What Scrap Sellers Should Know

Two grades dominate titanium scrap. Knowing the difference is the first step to a better offer.

Two grades, two worlds

Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium. Grade 5 is Ti-6Al-4V, an alloy with roughly 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium.

They look identical on the shop floor. They are not interchangeable in a melt.

Why it matters for value

Melt shops buy to chemistry. A lot of Grade 2 contaminated with Grade 5 can no longer be sold as either.

Segregated lots are valued on their own grade. Mixed lots are valued at the lowest acceptable use.

How to keep them apart

Use separate, labeled bins at each machine. Identify incoming bar stock before it is cut.
